Governor Proposes Taxing Veterinary Services
November 6, 2008 – “To generate additional General Fund revenue, the Governor proposed adding a sales tax to veterinary services. Historically in California, a veterinarian’s professional services have been exempt from sales tax. If implemented, the new tax would take effect February 1, 2009.
The CVMA is gathering more information on this and will keep members informed. Having a sales tax on veterinary services would raise the cost of services to the clients. Veterinarians already collect and report sales tax on sales of taxable goods, such as pet foods and pet supplies….”
“We strongly believe that pets are members of the family,” said Valerie Fenstermaker, CVMA executive director. “Any tax on veterinary services may prevent people getting good care for their pets. We believe that veterinary care, along with human care, should not be taxed.” (Extracted from CVMA website)
“Broadening the Sales and Use Tax to Include Certain Services: Effective February 1, 2009, the sales and use tax rate will be applied to appliance and furniture repair, vehicle repair, golf, and veterinarian services. Effective March 1, 2009, the sales and use tax rate will be applied to amusement parks and sporting events. This is expected to generate additional General Fund sales tax revenue of $357 million in 2008-09.” (Extracted from Office of Governor, Fact Sheet 11-6-2008)
